WTO: US Congressional delegation to visit WTO on 6 August
Published in SUNS #10257 dated 9 July 2025

Geneva, 8 Jul (D. Ravi Kanth) — A United States Congressional delegation is planning to visit the World Trade Organization on 6 August, a week in which the Trump administration is expected to conclude “a review of all international organizations of which the United States is a member and provides any funding or other support”, said people familiar with the development.

The 180-day deadline for reviewing all international organizations, as announced by the Trump administration on 4 February, will expire on 4 August.

The US administration has not paid its annual dues to the WTO for the past two years and has informed the WTO Committee on Budget, Finance and Administration that it is waiting for the review to be completed.

Recently, the US deputy trade representative and the likely trade envoy to the WTO, Joseph Barloon, told the US Senate, in reply to a written question, that US sovereign laws will take precedence over the multilateral trade rules, according to a report in the Washington Trade Daily.

The US will continue its funding and membership in the global trade body, said trade envoys familiar with the development.

Confirming the visit of the US Congressional delegation, the WTO’s spokesperson, Mr Ismaila Dieng, told the SUNS: “The Secretariat has received a request from the Ripon Society and the Franklin Center for Global Policy Exchange to host a US delegation under the Trans-Atlantic Capital to Capital Exchange (C2C) program.”

He said, “The US Congressional delegation is scheduled to visit the WTO on 6 August 2025.” +
