TWN Info Service on Climate Change (Nov23/03)
8 November 2023
Third World Network

Dear friends,

New briefing on global climate targets

A new Third World Network Briefing Paper cautions that the ongoing push by developed countries to establish global targets to address climate change is part of an effort to pass the mitigation burden increasingly on to developing countries. In this piecemeal manner of bringing up targets, the main target that the world has, namely, the fixed remaining carbon budget for the world for a given temperature limit, is never brought up. However, through these piecemeal targets the developed countries are continuing their appropriation of the remaining carbon budget, without acknowledging this fact in a direct way.

The paper, “Global climate targets: Peaking, emissions reduction and renewable energy” by T. Jayaraman and Tejal Kanitkar, is available here on the TWN website.

With best wishes,
Third World Network
